Factors That Influence A Natural Gas Utility Bill

Temperature
Temperature plays a key role in determining how much gas you use and how much your gas bill will be. Winter’s cool temperatures require higher gas use to keep your home warm. It’s important to note that for the past few years, winters in our area have been colder than normal. This weather pattern resulted in higher-than-average gas bills.

Inaccurate Meter Readings
An inaccurate meter reading may result in your gas bill being abnormally high or low. See the list below for tips on ensuring an accurate meter reading:

Do you own a dog? Your dog may do an excellent job of protecting your home from strangers — including Millennium meter readers or SJG service personnel. Please keep your pet leashed or confined when our employees are scheduled to visit your home. You’re responsible for your pet, and you may be charged for medical bills if your pet injures one of our employees.

Is your meter accessible? For your safety and ours, keep your meter clear of objects like piled boxes and shrubbery. This helps Millennium access your meter easily. In winter, keep snow and ice away from all parts of your gas meter. Also, kindly let us know if you plan to enclose your meter to avoid creating a safety hazard.

Can we see your address? Be sure your address is visible from at least 50 feet away. This helps us find your home quickly on routine and emergency calls. If your address has changed please let us know by calling our Customer Care Center at 1-888-766-9900.

Estimated Bills
A bill is estimated if something like a locked gate or a loose dog prevented us from reading your meter. We base estimated bills on the average amount of gas used during the same period last year as well as the amount used in the previous month. Your next actual meter reading adjusts any inaccuracy. To receive a corrected bill, you can read your meter and submit the reading by clicking here.

Billing Adjustments
Adjustments are additional fees and/or charges to your account. The most common adjustments are:
• Repair Charge
• Activation Fee
• Insufficient Fund Fee
• Collection Fee

If an adjustment is applied to your account, it will be clearly stated on your bill. If you are unsure as to why an adjustment was applied, please contact us at customercare@sjindustries.com.

Unpaid, Late or Undelivered Payments
A higher-than-average bill may reflect an unpaid balance. If you did not pay a previous month’s bill, you can click here to pay online or click here for other payment options. If you did make a payment but it does not appear on your bill, please contact us at customercare@sjindustries.com.
