BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY: New Jersey Clean Energy Program Seeking Participating Contractors

Direct Install Program Targeting
Small Business Contractors

May 12, 2009- New Jersey's Clean Energy Program is pleased to announce an exciting opportunity for contractors to participate in a new Direct Install Program targeted to New Jersey's Small Business Customers.

What is Direct Install?
Direct Install is designed as a turn-key equipment replacement program to reduce energy costs of small business customers whose facilities have peak electric demands not exceeding 200 kW. A network of program contractors will perform energy analysis and installation services. Customers installing eligible equipment replacement measures under the Program will receive financial incentives of up to 80% of installed costs. Categories eligible for equipment replacement incentives in 2009 include: lighting, HVAC, natural gas, refrigeration, and food service

What scope of services will be performed by program contractors?
Contractors will perform energy assessments and equipment inventories using provided software to identify energy efficiency measures eligible for incentives. Participating Contractors will then install measures according to an installation agreement signed by the customer.

What types of contractors will perform services?
There will be a network of program contractors selected via a Request for Proposal (RFP) process by the C&I Market Manager, TRC Energy Services. Two types of contractors will be awarded contracts:

Participating Electrical/HVAC Contractors will perform energy assessments and equipment installation services relating to lighting and HVAC equipment, in addition to inventories of other, "specialty" equipment.; and

Participating Specialty Contractors will perform energy assessments and equipment installation services relating to specialty (natural gas, refrigeration, and food service,) equipment.

How to become a program contractor?
To become a Direct Install program contractor, you must be awarded a contract by the Market Manager as a result of the program's Request for Proposal (RFP) process, which includes submitting all completed forms and a proposal as required. The RFP document, including forms, may be downloaded by clicking here As described in the RFP, you must first submit your Intent to Bid and other required Pre-Bid Submittal forms by 4:00 PM ET on May 19, 2009. Bidders selected by the Market Manager based on the pre-qualification phase will be invited to submit proposals.

INFO: Moving toward Green and Clean

As many of you know, the State of New Jersey already rewards homeowners and businesses who take steps to save energy.

One program, New Jersey Home Performance with Energy Star, connects interested residents with contractors certified by the Building Performance Institute who visit the home, identify sources of wasted energy and provide a detailed plan with recommended measures, costs and payback analysis.

As a utility, South Jersey Gas is also moving in the direction of “green” by more closely aligning our energy efficiency goals with those of the New Jersey Office of Clean Energy. We fully support the State’s programs and encourage customers to participate when possible.

If you’re not already a Home Performance contractor, you can gain a competitive edge and increase your business opportunities.

In order to become a participating contractor in Home Performance with ENERGY STAR, you will have the following steps:

  • Sign the Participation Agreement
  • Purchase diagnostic equipment (50% subsidy)
  • Become BPI Certified and Accredited (75% subsidy)
      - Attend the training (initial cost fully reimbursed upon      receiving BPI certification)
      - Take the BPI Written and Field Test
  • Begin participation in the program
  • Call 1-866-NJSMART for more information

Benefit from 25% on pre-approved co-op marketing, up to $10,000 from the State

For additional information about getting involved, contact Joe Mizzi at or call 1-866-NJSMART.

UPDATE: Marketing

As SJG Marketing expands its efforts to attract conversions and new expansion opportunities, we’re branching out with a new micro-site on the web. We just recently purchased a new domain name, livecomfortably4less.com, which will be active soon.

As we build the new landing page to spotlight marketing campaigns and promotions, you will notice that emails being sent to you currently under the name “from mlamb@sjindustries.com” will now read “from mlamb@livecomfortably4less.com”.

We’ll let you know when the new landing page is available for viewing.

UPDATE: Villas, Cape May County

UPDATE 6.12.09:
Main installation work continues along Bayshore Rd. As you may guess, our progress was slowed a bit due to the rain we've been experiencing. Several side streets are or will be receiving services in the coming weeks. These include Sheridan, Freedom, Oak, Nevada, and Iowa.

As of Friday, June 12th, we're closing in on 900 homeowners throughout the Villas who have expressed interest in switching to natural gas with over 450 of them submitting applications.

UPDATE 3.31.09:
Thanks to all the contractors who participated in our breakfast meeting on March 27 th. This is a great opportunity for us to successfully partner in another expansion project.

As a recap to the meeting, the Villas represents about 4000-6000 homes and is peppered with small businesses located predominantly along Bayshore Rd. The community is typical of many shore or near-shore neighborhoods which began as a summer vacation destination with cottages, bungalows and 1-story homes on very tight, compact lots. Over the years, as residents became more year-round, homes were “modified” to include heat.

As for the demographic makeup of the community, the Villas is a low to moderate income area with the annual median income estimated to be around $44,000 in 2007, much lower than the state’s average of $67,000 but higher than what was reported in 2000 --- approximately $33,000. To put this in perspective, the income is about half of that in Beesleys Point. Like many mature communities, the Villas is evolving as older generations are replaced with younger families. This is evident by the “additions” made to existing homes to accommodate children and larger family units. However, seniors, those over 65 years of age, continue to make up about 20-25% of the population.

So how far along is our main? We now have just over 3,000 feet of 8” main installed on Breakwater Rd. Once we have a tee in place at Breakwater and Fishing Creek, the pipe laid so far will be fed with natural gas and will be ready to serve the homes along the way. We anticipate this to be within two weeks after another 2,000 feet of 8” is installed.

We’re already seeing a good response from residents on Freedom and Sheridan Drives and are actively pursuing conversions along the main route and all side streets feeding off the main.

The Villas has been officially assigned to SJG Sales Representative Heather McCurdy who will be working out of the Swainton office. She can be reached via cell phone at 609-289-6050 or via email at hmccurdy@sjindustries.com.

NEWS: Potential Main Extension Projects          Updated 5.18.09

As you may know, SJG has formed a team dedicated to identifying and pursuing areas in our service territory that currently do not have natural gas infrastructure.

Whether a single street or an entire community, this team is charged with determining the feasibility of running main, canvassing homeowners regarding their interest and promoting the conversion to natural gas.

If you know of any areas that you believe would be an area of interest, please email information to mlamb@sjindustries.com.

Listed below are areas currently being reviewed by
the Main Extension Team. All contractors are welcome to advertise to these communities.

New areas were added to the list on 6.18.09.
