Factors that influence a gas bill

Temperature – Winter’s colder temperatures require more gas use to keep your home or business warm.

Inaccurate Meter Reading – an inaccurate reading may result in an abnormally high or low gas bill. To ensure an accurate reading see the tips below:

  • Pets – Please keep pets leashed or confined when Millennium meter readers visit your home.
  • Meter Accessibility – Please keep your meter clear of shrubbery or other objects. In winter, please keep snow and ice away from all parts of the meter. Please let us know if you plan to enclose your meter.
  • Address Visibility – Please be sure your address is visible from 50 feet away. Also, if your address has changed please call our Customer Care Center at 1-888-766-9900.
  • Estimated Bill – We estimate bills if something prevents us from accessing your meter. To receive a corrected bill, you can read your meter and submit the reading by clicking here.

Billing Adjustments – Adjustments are additional fees or charges such as:

  • Repair charge
  • Activation fee
  • Insufficient fund fee
  • Collection fee

Unpaid, late or undelivered payments – a higher than average bill may reflect an unpaid balance. If you did not pay a previous month’s bill, you can click here to pay online. If you made a payment but it’s not reflected on your bill, please contact us.

Definitions

BGSS - Basic Gas Supply Service is the cost associated with purchasing natural gas supplies for customers.

Delivery Charge - This charge covers the cost of moving natural gas through our pipes to the meter at your home and includes the costs associated with providing you with safe, reliable service.

Price to Compare - This price is a reference point to compare deregulated natural gas suppliers. In order for deregulated natural gas suppliers to offer you savings, their price must be below SJG's price to compare. Use this price and other criteria to determine whether or not you should switch from South Jersey Gas to a deregulated natural gas supplier.

Current Marketer Charges - These charges will only appear if you have selected a deregulated gas supplier. You agreed to pay these charges when you switched suppliers from South Jersey Gas to the deregulated energy supplier. Any questions regarding these charges should be directed to the marketer listed on the bill. If you feel you have been switched without your knowledge let us know. There are strict laws and penalties for marketers that switch clients without their knowledge.
