Energy
Saving Tips
Use less energy, save money,
and help the environment by following South Jersey
Gas’s energy efficiency tips for the summer
months.
Set
your thermostat to 78 degrees or more during
the summer. |
| Set your
refrigerator at 40 degrees and your freezer
at zero. If your refrigerator has an “efficiency” setting,
make sure it is on. |
Use
an outdoor clothing line to hang your clothes
instead of using the dryer. |
Take
showers instead of baths. |
| Trim or
remove grass, weeds, leaves and other obstacles
from around the outdoor unit of your cooling
system. When airflow is blocked it puts a strain
on the system and lowers efficiency. |
| Make sure
window air conditioners are sized correctly.
If they are too small they will run constantly
but not cool the room. If they are too large
they will use more energy then necessary. |
| Try not
to use a dehumidifier at the same time as your
air conditioner. The dehumidifier will increase
the cooling load and force the air conditioner
to work harder. |
| Install
awnings on south-facing windows, where there’s
insufficient roof overhang or vegetation to
provide shade. |
| Clear attic
vents. If your home has an attic fan, make
sure it is functioning properly. |
| Turn off
your furnace pilot light during the non-heating
season. |
| Replace
incandescent light bulbs with cooler-burning
fluorescent bulbs to reduce the amount of heat
in your home. |
| Wash clothes
with cold water, cook foods at the lowest possible
setting and resist the temptation to open the
oven door when baking. |
| Cook outdoors!
Summer is a great time to barbeque outside,
which will avoid heating up the kitchen. |
| Wrap your
water heater and the pipes leading to it. After
the air conditioner, the water heater is the
second-greatest home energy user. |
| The most
important factor in cooling your home is not
to let it heat up in the first place. Good
insulation, caulking and weather stripping
help keep the heat outside during the summer. |

Going
on vacation?
The following tips will help save energy while you’re away: |
| Turn electric
water heaters and electric ceiling heaters
off at the breaker. |

Turn
off pool, spa and waterbed heaters. |
| Set gas
appliance pilot lights to “pilot” position. |
| |
Have
a pool in your backyard? |
| If you
have a pool or spa, talk to your pool service
representative about the minimum filtering
hours based on the size of the pool to avoid
over-filtering. |
| Keep the
pool/spa covered when not in use to minimize
heat loss. |
| Replace
your old, inefficient pump/motor assembly with
a new energy-efficient model. |
