Thank you for your interest in switching to natural gas. Our goal is to make natural gas available to all communities we serve.
How do I get Started?
• Phone: 1.800.934.9183
• Mail: Return enclosed paper application in postage paid envelope
Upon receipt of this application, we will begin the process of determining availability of service.
A heating/cooling contractor or plumber will perform all of the installation work inside of your home. For your convenience, you can use our list of SJG Participating Contractors. If you choose to do the work yourself, you are required to complete a “self-install” form stating that you agree to conform to the codes of your township or municipality. Your Sales Representative can provide the form.
South Jersey Gas will apply for state, county and/or municipal permits, which have varying approval times.
It is the homeowner's responsibility to accurately mark out any underground lines that have been privately run with flags or marking spray (ie. water, electric and sewer lines, septic systems, invisible pet fences, fiber optics and telephone lines, all lines to outbuildings, and sprinkler systems). Visit southjerseygas.com/videos and watch our video titled “Markouts” to learn more about marking out your property. Learn more here.
Once your application is approved, the South Jersey Gas Representative or Design Team will determine the best path for your installation. You may see the team collecting field information from your property to plan your design. SJG will install the service line to your home and the meter on your property.
On your first bill (or the one subsequent to that), you will see the following:
- One-time fee of $45.00 ($7.00 account activation fee, $38.00 turn on fee)
- A customer charge, usually ranging between $8.00 and $10.00 per month (in SJG bill details)
- A charge for natural gas used (listed as Delivery Charge & BGSS in SJG bill details)
- A security deposit. This can be waived with a “letter of credit” from another utility company. Once you’ve obtained this letter, submit it with your first bill or fax it directly to our Customer Care Center at 1.609.567.2684.
Visit myaccount.southjerseygas.com and register to view and pay your bill, opt for Paperless Billing and/or Auto Pay and more.

That depends on the distance your home is from the gas main and the natural gas appliances you select. For many of our customers, the service line is installed free of charge up to the location of our meter.
Contact your local Account Manager who will explain the process, answer all of your questions and take your application.
Yes, when you use an SJG Participating Contractor, you may be eligible for 0% equipment financing. Ask your Account Manager for more information.
Yes, you can, but we recommend using a licensed contractor who will take care of getting the required permits for your municipality or township, and professionally install your new equipment (Participating Contractors). If you do choose to install the equipment yourself or have a friend or relative complete the work, you will not be able to take advantage of SJG financing offers.
Yes, a contractor can manage the removal. If your current equipment includes a leaking underground oil tank, you may be eligible for a grant from the State of New Jersey. Visit https://www.nj.gov/dep/grantandloanprograms/sr_ustru.htm. For propane tank removal, consult your contractor.
In most cases, conversion kits are available. We recommend that if your equipment is more than 10 years old, you consider upgrading to high efficiency equipment to take advantage of additional savings.
Your Account Manager will work with you to find a spot that meets the requirements.
