Kickstart your career or advance in energy efficiency with no-cost Building Performance Institute (BPI) training and certification classes. We are excited to offer trainings to bolster the local workforce and support New Jersey’s more energy-efficient future. In addition to training, South Jersey Gas will work to connect successfully certified participants with potential employment opportunities.
Get Started in Energy Efficiency:
This class is designed for new entrants to the energy efficiency industry, as well as back-office personnel who support industry work. The BSP is now the starting point for the professional BPI certification journey. It provides an overview of the energy efficiency industry, residential construction and building systems, the field of Building Science and the basics of energy conservation. Upon completion of the course, participants will complete a 100-question test to earn a Building Science Principles Certificate.

With a prerequisite of the BSP Certificate, the BAT course will prepare workers for the field of weatherization and energy auditing. Building on the BSP, this course provides detailed learning and practice of building inspection, data gathering, diagnostic testing, energy conservation measures, HVAC systems and health and safety concerns. Upon completion of this class, students will complete a 4-hour proctored field exam to gain the Building Analyst Technician certification.

The IDL course prepares practitioners for the execution of envelope tightness and duct leakage tests. These tests are required for new construction code compliance. Candidates must pass a proctored field exam to gain the Infiltration and Duct Leakage certification.

Expand Your Knowledge in Energy Efficiency:
With a prerequisite of the BAT certification, the BAP course will upskill existing professionals with work scope development, energy modeling, and further knowledge of HVAC systems, best practices and on-site management. Upon completion of this training class, students will complete a 2-hour online exam to gain the Building Analyst Professional certification.

Many Department of Energy funded programs require the Energy Auditor certification. Candidates must apply to BPI for the opportunity to complete the online and field EA tests. The course is designed for seasoned professionals who are required to have 1,000 hours of field experience. Candidates are expected to have working knowledge of building science principles, work scope and jobsite requirements, envelope failures and mechanical systems. This class offers a web-based seminar test prep and review and an in-person field refresher. Candidates must pass a proctored 100-question online exam and a 4-hour field exam to gain the Energy Auditor certification.

The QCI certification is a micro-credential offered to holders of the Energy Auditor certification. The course comprises a web-based test prep and review seminar covering work scope documentation, program compliance and diagnostic tests. Candidates must pass a 50-question online exam to gain the Quality Control Inspector certification.

The MFBA certification is designed for existing professionals seeking to upskill to analyzing multi-family and commercial buildings. The course covers utility analysis and energy modelling, as well as inspections of HVAC, envelope, and water systems. Candidates must pass two online tests to gain the Multi-Family Building Analyst certification.

Courses are intended for graduating high school seniors or individuals who are 18 years or older. All courses will take place in Long Branch, New Jersey. SJI employees are not eligible to enroll.
