6 Renter-Friendly Tips to Save Energy This Summer

6 Renter-Friendly Tips to Save Energy This Summer

With the rising cost of living, many NJ residents are looking for practical ways to lower their energy bills. But, for those who rent, it can feel like you’re stuck paying more without much of a say over upgrades or insulation. The good news? There are still many everyday habits and practices that can add up to significant differences that help you be more energy efficient.

1. Up Your Shading Game
This summer, many of us may be planning to catch some rays down the shore, but when it comes to your home, the extra sunlight can bring some unwanted heat indoors, leading to more strain on your cooling systems. To prevent this, try using light-colored curtains, blinds, or non-adhesive window film to reflect sunlight and keep your home cooler. Additionally, closing blinds or curtains during the sunniest parts of the day (typically mid-to-late afternoons) can help reduce indoor temperatures naturally.

2. Use a Smart Thermostat (If allowed)
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, setting your thermostat at 78°F while you are home during the summer is the most cost-effective method to reduce your energy footprint and your bill. However, for those of us who run hotter than others, or who have different preferences, a smart thermostat can be a great tool to ensure you are using your energy wisely. Smart thermostats can learn your ideal settings for heating and cooling, and adjust automatically, thereby reducing cooling costs, especially when you are not home. Be sure to check with your landlord about installing a smart thermostat. South Jersey Gas customers may even qualify for instant discounts through our utility Marketplace.

3. Improve Airflow & Ventilation
Your interior’s airflow is another factor to consider. Making small adjustments to how air moves through your home can help your AC work more efficiently and make your living spaces comfy in the warmer months. Using a ceiling fan in the summer is a great hack to push cool air down. Just remember to turn fans off when leaving a room, and make sure that when it is running, that it rotates clockwise. Check to ensure vents aren’t blocked by things like furniture or rugs. Also, be sure to move heat-producing appliances like lamps or electronics away from the thermostat. The excess heat from those and other household items could trick your system into running more than needed.

4. Adopt Cooling-Efficient Habits
Outside of keeping your cooling system happy  , there are many habits in your daily routines that could make you more energy-smart. Do laundry with cold or warm water, instead of hot, to cut your washing machine’s energy use. When possible, also avoid using the stovetop or oven to heat food since these can unintentionally heat your entire space. Lastly, try removing any area rugs you may have in summer to help keep floors and rooms cooler.

5. Plan for Your Time Away
Before heading out for a summer vacation, take steps to reduce wasteful energy use. Most electronic devices continue to draw power even when turned off. By turning off all your lights and unplugging appliances like TVs, coffee makers, and computers, you can prevent these devices from continuing to rack up high energy bills while you are away.

6. Communicate with Your Landlord
You don’t know what is possible until you ask! Given that landlords and property managers want good renter retention and satisfaction, they may be open to improvements that reduce both your bills and their long-term maintenance costs. When communicating with your landlord, ask about sealing air leaks or applying insulation upgrades, especially if you notice drafts or inefficient cooling.

You don’t have to own your place to make smart energy choices. Small changes, smart habits, and a little communication can go a long way toward lowering your energy bills and could make your home more comfortable this summer.
